Within SCIANCE,&nbsp;SoBigData serves as Scientific Coordinator for the Social Sciences and Humanities domain, contributing to the cross-domain coordination effort that underpins the project’s mission.



The magazine editorial situates SCIANCE within the broader European policy context, referencing its funding by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and its role in building coordinated European capacity for AI-enabled science.

SCIANCE Kick Off

SCIANCE selected to support RAISE as the European Commission launches new AI science initiative&nbsp;



The European Commission recently launched the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE) at the AI in Science Summit held in Copenhagen in early November &#8211; marking a major step toward strengthening AI-driven scientific research across Europe. 



In her announcement, European Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva recognised the SCIANCE consortium, whose proposal has been positively evaluated and invited to enter grant preparation under Horizon Europe. She highlighted the strategic role SCIANCE will play in shaping the development of RAISE and in coordinating AI-enabled science through a bottom-up, community-driven approach mobilising leading European research and digital infrastructures, organisations, and networks.

What is RAISE?&nbsp;



RAISE – the&nbsp;Resource for Artificial Intelligence Science in Europe&nbsp;– is a new European virtual institute designed to accelerate the adoption of AI in scientific research. It brings together computing power, data,&nbsp;expertise&nbsp;and funding to support scientists in developing and applying AI for transformative discoveries across all research fields.&nbsp; As a&nbsp;flagship&nbsp;initiative related to&nbsp;the European Strategy for AI in Science, RAISE will help position Europe as a global leader in AI-enabled research.&nbsp;



About SCIANCE&nbsp;



SCIANCE (AI in Science)&nbsp;will support the development of RAISE and coordinate AI-enabled scientific research across Europe through a bottom-up approach. The project mobilises leading European scientific organisations and research infrastructures across five pilot areas&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;fundamental physics and astronomy, materials science, life science, earth sciences, and social sciences and humanities&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;together with AI research centres and e-infrastructures. SCIANCE will&nbsp;identify&nbsp;AI-in-science research and innovation priorities and pilot the structure of the RAISE Secretariat&nbsp;for AI in science.&nbsp;

SCIANCE will regularly launch open calls to involve the wider community in shaping AI in Science priorities and activities. These may include calls for expert contributions, expressions of interest to join working groups, or consultations on strategic outputs such as the SRIA and Infrastructure Roadmap. Participation is open to researchers, infrastructure providers, policymakers, industry representatives, and other stakeholders interested in contributing to AI-enabled science in Europe.
